Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc is a small island located 2 hours off the coast of Vietnam. Today it is still a very poor island, even though it is soon to become a booming tourist vacation spot. The thing that was amazing about this Island was that on the main beach there were many resorts and modern hotels, (not skyscrapers just one-two story beachy hotels). Yet right next to our hotel was a tiny little slum. It was not your average Urban Slum. There were many tiny shacks made out of leaves, little resources and many families sleeping under the one roof. As we were lieing on the beach at sunset, lots of families and their children came down to bathe in the water and wash clothes. Above is a few photos I took of the families. I personally love the one of the two boys running with the setting sun. Phu Quoc is soon to be opening an "International" boat terminal. They hope to increase large quantities of tourists to gain a steady income. I am pretty sure this will spoil the nature of this beautiful island. 1/3 of the island was taken up by the tiny airport, new hotels, and one market place, and the rest of the island was just untouched. Increased development may potentially ruin this Island. The People of Phu Quoc are remotely happy as they are attracted to the idea of wealth, yet from the Western World we know that wealth and money will diminish their happiness. I would love to go back later on in my life and see the changes.
